Maintenance of senior citizen home

The traditional norms and values of the Indian society laid stress on showing respect and providing care for the aged. However, in recent times, society is witnessing a gradual but definite decline of the joint family system, as a result of which a large number of parents are being neglected by their families exposing them to lack of emotional, physical and financial support. These older persons are facing a lot of problems in the absence of adequate social security. This clearly reveals that ageing has become a major social challenge and there is a need to provide for the economic and health needs of the elderly and to create a social milieu, which is conducive and sensitive to the emotional needs of the elderly. VJSS managing 08 numbers of shelter homes since’ year 1992-93 being supported by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The old age home are being insured with Doctor and Nurse and along with that professionally trained staffs like Superintendent, Social worker and other helps such as Cook and helper for necessary care and services of older person are made available for both the centres.

Objectives : Shelter Homes

The main objective of the Scheme is to improve the quality of life of the Senior Citizens by providing basic amenities like shelter, food, medical care and entertainment opportunities and by encouraging productive and active ageing through providing support for capacity building.


Activities : Shelter Homes

* Provision of nutrition food with health supplements daily cooked and served to elders.
* For physical wellbeing of elders, they are encouraged to practiced Yoga and Meditation, offer prayers in morning and evening on regular basis.
* Weekly routine health check up done by Doctor.
* As part of programme recreational activities, like play cards, watching TV, reading spiritual books, magazines and playing games at the home.
* In the leisure time elders have taken up gardening activities.


Maintenance of senior citizen homes for older women

VJSS, managing Senior Citizens Home for older women since 2013-14 at Tangi under Khordha district of Odisha. There are 50 (Fifty) such elderly women above 60 years of age, residing in the centre, which includes different categories such as widow, abandoned from family, childless, Helpless and specially women with inadequate social support etc. This project is funded by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The Organisation recruited Professionally trained staff at managerial level from, Programme Manager, Superintendent, Social worker to health professionals like ANM, doctor and office assistants like Cook and helper as per the guidelines of the programme.


Objective : Maintenance of senior citizen homes for older women

The main objective of the programme is to provide shelter and care to elderly women in the age group of 60 to 90 years, particularly the destitute, widow who are facing real crisis and to ensure live their life with dignity.


Activities: Maintenance of senior citizen homes for older women

* As per the guidelines daily nutrition food, hot cooked served to the elders in the home, besides nutrition food health supplements like fruit juices also provided.
* For physical wellbeing of elders, they are encouraged to practiced Yoga and Meditation, offer prayers in morning and evening on regular basis.
* Weekly routine health checks up done by Doctor and medicines provided.
* As part of programme recreational activities, like play cards, watching TV, reading spiritual books, magazines and playing games at the home.
* In the leisure time they visit nearby temples with the help of escorts of the home.
* The organization provided shelter to 149 elderly women in the home.


Family & Community responsibilities

Educating about aging the others family members particularly the young on their role in keeping the elders happy and active and to support them physically, socially and environmentally is equally important. The scope for intervention by mental health professionals are in planning and delivering adequate therapeutic services in the clinical context. The outcomes of our intervention would help in implementing the rehabilitation programme for elderly people at home and community level.


Shelter home for urban homeless (suh)

The programme commences from year 2017-18 in Baripada of Mayurbhanj district, Balasore district, Ganjamdistrict, Kendujhar district and Bhadrak Municipality. This programme is funded by Department of Housing and Urban Development, Govt. of Odisha. The organization recruited professionally trained personnel, including one Shelter Manager and 3 Caregivers. The main objective of the Shelter for Urban Homeless (SUH) is to provide shelter and all other essential services to the poorest of the poor segment of urban societies. The shelter is permanent all-weather 24 x 7 shelters for the urban homeless.

To provide temporary shelter those who are coming to town for wage employment and other poor Homeless of Urban area.

* Organisation of Awareness programmes for shelter of Urban Homeless,
* Created awareness on shelter home & its services through distribution of leaflets, posters, wall painting, Banner, FGD, and Area Sabha/meeting in Boudh, Baripada, Kendujhar, Balesore & Ganjam city,
* Collection of user charges as per norms of the programme from inmates.


Outcome : Shelter home for urban homeless (suh)

* Total 32917 inmates have joined the shelter home,
* 316 beneficiaries were rescued, and 324 inmates were rehabilitated.
* Total user fee Rs.229690/- has been collected during the year in each (SUH) from their short stay at SUH.
* Counseling on family reintegration, Slum dwellers land right provision, PMAY, Health treatment has been provided to the inmates.
